Haier splits its faults in two: E-codes for indoor-side problems and F-codes for outdoor-side problems reported through the indoor unit. Ducted and cassette systems use a separate numeric set shown on the wired controller. All three are below, along with the codes Haier hides from the indoor display entirely.

How to find your Haier fault code

Wall splits — the code shows on the indoor unit

  1. 1 E-codes and F-codes appear in the indoor unit's display window, or via the indicator lamps on models without a display.
  2. 2 E-codes are indoor-side faults; F-codes are outdoor-side faults reported through the indoor unit.
  3. 3 Some outdoor faults are hidden from the indoor display — they're read as flash counts on the outdoor board's LED1 instead (see the note below).

Ducted and cassettes — read the wired controller

  1. 1 The code appears directly on the wall controller's screen.
  2. 2 Ducted and light-residential systems use their own numeric code set, listed separately below — don't cross-read them against the wall-split E/F tables.
Worth knowing: Several outdoor faults (F2, F8, F14, F19 and F23) are hidden codes: they're reported as flash counts on the outdoor unit's LED1 and only appear on the indoor display after a specific button sequence, so a technician may quote you one you never saw. Code meanings also vary between series — always confirm against the manual for your exact model before ordering parts.

Indoor unit faults — E-codes (wall-mounted splits and multi-splits)

E1 Room (return air) temperature sensor failure — the indoor unit can no longer read the room temperature, so it cannot control to your set point. The room-air thermistor is open circuit, short circuit, unplugged at the indoor control board, or has fallen out of its sensor holder. Book a service
E2 Indoor heat-exchanger (coil pipe) temperature sensor failure — the unit cannot read its own coil temperature, which it needs for freeze and overheat protection. Indoor pipe thermistor open or short circuit, or its plug has worked loose on the indoor PCB. Book a service
E3 Power supply voltage anomaly at the indoor unit — supply missing or outside limits (roughly below 187 V or above 270 V), or the zero-cross detection on the indoor board is faulty. Displayed as E3 on some panels and as C1 on ceiling/floor console models; shows as 0D on the ducted/cassette wired controller. Site voltage sag or surge, loose active/neutral at the isolator or terminal block, shared circuit overloaded, or a failed indoor PCB zero-cross detection circuit. Book a service
E4 Indoor control board memory (EEPROM) error — the board cannot read its own stored settings data. Corrupted EEPROM data, a loose or damaged EEPROM chip, or a failing indoor PCB. Haier's service procedure is to reset power first, and replace the indoor board only if the code repeats. Try this first

Switch the system off at its circuit breaker (and the outdoor isolator if fitted), wait a full 2 minutes, then switch back on. If E4 returns, the indoor board needs replacing — book a technician.

E5 Indoor coil has frosted/iced up and freeze protection has stopped the system. Restricted airflow across the indoor coil — clogged filters, a dirty coil, blocked return-air grille or too many closed zones — or a low refrigerant charge. Try this first

Turn the unit off, remove and wash the indoor filters, allow any visible ice 1–2 hours to melt fully, make sure return-air and supply grilles are unobstructed, then restart. If it ices again within a week, it is low on gas or the coil needs cleaning — book a service.

E7 Communication fault between the indoor and outdoor units — the two control boards have stopped exchanging data (declared after roughly 4 minutes of silence). Shown as 15 flashes of LED1 on the outdoor board. Outdoor unit has lost power (tripped breaker or switched-off isolator), a damaged, loose or incorrectly terminated interconnecting control wire, moisture or corrosion in a terminal block, spliced or undersized control cable, or a failed indoor/outdoor PCB. Try this first

Check the outdoor unit's isolating switch and the system's circuit breaker are both ON, then power the whole system down at the breaker for 2 minutes and restore it. Do not open terminal covers. If E7 comes back, the interconnecting wiring or a control board needs a technician.

E8 Communication error between the wired controller and the indoor unit — no valid communication for more than 4 continuous minutes. (On ducted/cassette the same fault shows as 08, or as a flashing 07 with the lamp on for YR-E17 controllers.) Wired-controller cable damaged, loose or wrong polarity at the terminal block; controller cable run alongside mains cable picking up interference; faulty wired controller; faulty indoor PCB; more than the allowed number of indoor units on one controller. Book a service
E9 Indoor coil thermal overload in heating — the indoor coil exceeded its maximum temperature limit and the system shut down to protect itself. Restricted indoor airflow (dirty filters, blocked grilles, too many zones closed on ducted), a dirty indoor coil, low refrigerant charge, or a faulty electronic expansion valve. Try this first

Clean the indoor filters and open up the supply and return grilles (on ducted, make sure at least the required number of zones are open), then restart. If it trips again, book a technician — it usually indicates low gas or a valve fault.

E14 Indoor fan motor malfunction — the board asked the indoor fan to run but never saw it reach the commanded speed. Failed indoor fan motor, seized bearings, an obstructed or fouled blower wheel, a broken motor lead, or a fan-drive fault on the indoor PCB. Book a service
E20 Outdoor unit generic alarm — the indoor unit is only reporting 'there is a fault in the outdoor unit'. It is a pointer, not a diagnosis: the real code must be read from the outdoor PCB LED flash count or from the wired controller. Any outdoor-side trip (compressor, IPM, sensor, pressure switch). The indoor board received a fault flag over the P/Q comms line but no specific code, or the model does not pass the outdoor code through to the indoor display. Book a service
EC Refrigerant leakage detection — the unit has decided performance is abnormal for the operating conditions and has dropped into protection mode to save the compressor. (On fixed-speed/on-off models the same function is reported as FE, 'refrigerant leaking detection malfunction'; on inverter models the equivalent outdoor-side code is F13 / outdoor LED 16.) Genuine loss of R32/R410A charge from a flare, braze or coil leak; but also commonly triggered without a real leak by a clogged return-air filter, blocked indoor or outdoor coil, blocked/kinked liquid line, or a faulty pipe temperature sensor giving a false superheat reading. Outdoor unit faults — F-codes (wall-mounted splits and multi-splits)

F2 Compressor start failure — the drive module detected that the compressor failed to start (over-current at start-up). Outdoor LED1 flashes 24 times. Seized or failing compressor, drive module fault, or a closed service valve. Distinct from the running-overcurrent codes. Switch off & call
F3 Communication fault between the inverter (IPM) module board and the outdoor main control board. Outdoor LED1 flashes 4 times. Loose or unseated inter-board plug (CN9 on both boards), damaged harness, or a failed module board. Book a service
F4 Compressor discharge (hot gas) overheat protection — discharge temperature above 115°C. Low refrigerant charge, a restriction in the circuit, or a blocked outdoor coil. Self-clears within 3 minutes once discharge falls below 115°C, and locks out after repeated trips. Switch off & call
F5 Inverter module thermal overload — the power module itself exceeded its safe operating temperature. Outdoor fan not running, blocked or dirty condenser coil, poor thermal contact between module and heatsink, or extreme ambient temperature. Switch off & call
F6 Outdoor ambient temperature sensor failure. Outdoor LED1 flashes 12 times. Ambient thermistor open or short circuit, sensor out of its holder, or a loose plug at the outdoor PCB. Book a service
F7 Compressor suction temperature sensor failure. Outdoor LED1 flashes 11 times. Suction thermistor open or short circuit, or a poor connection at the compressor sensor plug. Book a service
F8 Outdoor DC fan motor fault — the fan is not turning, or is not reporting the speed the board commanded. Outdoor LED1 flashes 9 times. Fan jammed by leaves, sticks or a plastic bag, iced up, failed fan motor, broken motor lead, or a fan-driver fault on the outdoor board. Try this first

Switch the system off at the outdoor isolator, then clear leaves, sticks, plastic, and overgrown plants from around and on top of the outdoor unit and check nothing is fouling the fan guard. Never put fingers or tools through the guard. Restore power after 2 minutes. If F8 returns, the fan motor or its driver has failed — book a technician.

F9 Outdoor controller MCU reset — the outdoor microprocessor restarted unexpectedly during operation. Mains supply disturbance or brownout, electrical noise on the supply, or a failing outdoor control board. Book a service
F10 Liquid pipe temperature sensor failure for indoor unit A (multi-split systems only — port A). Liquid line thermistor at the outdoor unit's port A branch is open or short circuit, or unplugged. Book a service
F11 Compressor loss of synchronism — the inverter lost track of the compressor rotor and had to stop. Outdoor LED1 flashes 18 times. Compressor overloading or beginning to seize, sharply fluctuating load, a fault in the current-sensing circuit, or a missing inverter gate-drive signal. Switch off & call
F12 Outdoor control board memory (EEPROM) error. Outdoor LED1 flashes 1 time. Corrupted EEPROM data, a loose or damaged EEPROM chip, or a failing outdoor control board. Try this first

Switch the system off at its circuit breaker for a full 2 minutes, then restore power. If F12 comes straight back, the outdoor control board needs replacing — book a technician.

F13 Low refrigerant charge, or the discharge line is blocked — the discharge-to-suction temperature split was abnormal after 10 minutes of running. Outdoor LED1 flashes 16 times. Refrigerant leak, undercharge at installation, or a blockage/restriction in the refrigerant circuit. Switch off & call
F14 Reversing (4-way) valve changeover failure in HEATING — the system called for heating but the indoor coil never warmed up. Declared when indoor coil temperature stays below ambient + 5°C for 10 minutes after the compressor starts. Usually a stuck reversing valve or its solenoid coil. Book a service
F15 Board / terminal-block over-temperature protection at the outdoor unit — the PCB has sensed overheating on the wiring terminals or power components and shut down. Corresponds to outdoor board LED flash count 20. Loose, corroded or under-torqued interconnecting cable terminals causing high resistance and localised heating; undersized or nicked interconnect cable; heat-damaged terminal block; overheating components on the outdoor PCB. F16 Liquid pipe temperature sensor failure for indoor unit B (multi-split systems only). Liquid line thermistor on the port B branch is open or short circuit, or unplugged. Book a service

F20 Inverter module / compressor overload — the module ran beyond its rated load and shut down. Outdoor LED1 flashes 5 times. Compressor working against excessive head pressure, blocked condenser, overcharge, or a failing compressor. Switch off & call
F21 Outdoor coil (defrost/frost-removing) temperature sensor failure. Outdoor LED1 flashes 10 times. Defrost thermistor open or short circuit, dislodged from the coil, or a loose plug at the outdoor PCB. Book a service
F22 AC overcurrent protection on the outdoor unit — total mains current drawn exceeded the permitted limit. Outdoor LED1 flashes 3 times. Compressor drawing excessive current, blocked condenser, overcharge, failing compressor windings, or a faulty current-sensing/module board. Switch off & call
F23 Drive module input overcurrent / IPM phase-current protection — trips when drive module input current exceeds roughly 32 A (twin-fan models) or 27 A (single-fan models). Compressor problem, drive module fault, or the system running badly overloaded. Switch off & call
F24 Module current-detection circuit fault — the drive board can no longer measure compressor current reliably, so it will not permit the compressor to run. Damaged current-sampling circuitry on the inverter module board. Switch off & call
F25 Compressor discharge temperature sensor failure. Outdoor LED1 flashes 13 times. Discharge thermistor open or short circuit, off the discharge line, or unplugged at the outdoor board. Book a service
F26 Gas pipe temperature sensor failure for indoor unit E (multi-split systems only). Gas line thermistor on the port E branch is open or short circuit, or unplugged. Book a service
F27 Compressor current sampling (current-detection) circuit fault — the board can't read compressor current correctly. Outdoor LED1 flashes 7 times on single-zone units. Faulty current-detection circuit on the outdoor PCB, or a wiring/connector fault at the current sensor. Switch off & call
F28 Compressor rotor position (station) detection error — the drive cannot locate the compressor rotor, or there is no wiring between the drive module and the compressor. Outdoor LED1 flashes 19 times. Disconnected or incorrectly landed compressor motor leads, open compressor winding, or a failed drive module. Switch off & call
F29 Gas pipe temperature sensor failure for indoor unit A (multi-split systems only). Gas line thermistor on the port A branch is open or short circuit, or unplugged. Book a service
F30 Series-dependent: on multi-split outdoor units this is a gas pipe temperature sensor failure for indoor unit B; on some single-split series the same code is used for compressor suction temperature too high (outdoor LED1 flashes 14 times). Either a thermistor open/short circuit on the port B branch, or genuinely elevated compressor suction temperature caused by low charge or a valve fault. F31 Gas pipe temperature sensor failure for indoor unit C (multi-split systems only). Gas line thermistor on the port C branch is open or short circuit, or unplugged. Book a service

F35 Inverter module temperature sensor failure, or a momentary power failure was detected. Module thermistor open or short circuit, or a brief interruption/brownout on the mains supply. Book a service
F36 Mid-condenser (condensing) temperature sensor failure. Outdoor LED1 flashes 39 times. Condenser mid-coil thermistor open or short circuit, dislodged from the coil, or unplugged. Book a service
F38 Condenser inlet (Toci) temperature sensor failure. Toci thermistor reading outside its valid range, open circuit or short circuit. Book a service
F39 System high pressure switch has opened — refrigerant pressure exceeded the safety limit and the switch cut the compressor. Blocked or filthy condenser coil, outdoor fan not running, refrigerant overcharge, a closed service valve, or a blockage in the circuit. Switch off & call
F40 System low pressure switch has opened — refrigerant pressure fell below the safety limit. Refrigerant leak or serious undercharge, a blocked filter drier or expansion valve, or severely restricted indoor airflow. Switch off & call
F41 System high pressure protection (temperature-based) — condensing temperature reached the protection limit and the unit stopped. Refrigerant overabundance, high condensing temperature from a dirty or obstructed outdoor coil, or an outdoor fan motor fault. Switch off & call
F42 System low pressure protection (temperature-based) — evaporating temperature fell to the protection limit and the unit stopped. Refrigerant shortage, low defrost coil temperature, or an outdoor fan motor fault. Switch off & call
F43 Indoor/outdoor communication protocol incorrect — model matching abnormality. The indoor and outdoor units are not a compatible pair or cannot agree on the protocol. Corresponds to outdoor board LED flash count 46. Indoor unit paired with a non-matching outdoor unit; wrong replacement PCB fitted at a previous repair; incorrect capacity DIP/jumper setting; damaged or incorrectly landed interconnecting communication cable. Switch the ducted system off at its circuit breaker for a full 2 minutes and restore power. If the code returns, the indoor control board needs attention — book a technician.

05 Indoor PCB memory (EEPROM) failure — slim duct and cassette platform. Indoor PCB LED5 5 flashes; panel display E05. EEPROM chip loose, damaged or incorrectly programmed, or a failed indoor board. Try this first

Power the system down at the circuit breaker for 2 minutes, then restore. If 05 reappears immediately, book a technician — the board needs replacing.

06 Communication failure between the indoor and outdoor units. Indoor PCB LED 6 flashes; panel display E06. Wrong or broken interconnecting wiring, incorrect indoor unit address setting, loss of power to the outdoor unit, or a failed control board. Try this first

Confirm the outdoor unit's isolating switch and the system circuit breaker are ON, then power everything down at the breaker for 2 minutes and restore. If 06 persists, the interconnect wiring or a board needs a technician.

07 Communication failure between the wired controller and the indoor unit PCB. Indoor PCB LED 7 flashes. On YR-E17 controllers this code FLASHES ON THE MAIN SCREEN rather than in the fault-check screen. Wrong or damaged controller cable, controller not correctly landed on the indoor terminal, a broken wired controller, or an indoor PCB hardware fault. Also occurs if the controller was powered up while the indoor unit was off. Try this first

Switch the system off at the circuit breaker for a full 2 minutes, then restore power and let the controller run its 4-minute initialisation. If 07 keeps flashing, the controller cable or a board needs a technician — do not open the controller or the indoor unit.

08 Indoor drainage system fault / condensate float switch tripped — the drain pan is filling faster than it can empty, so the unit has shut down to prevent a ceiling leak. Indoor PCB LED 8 flashes; panel display E08. Blocked or airlocked condensate drain line, failed or disconnected condensate pump, float switch disconnected or out of position, or a seized pump motor. Try this first

Find where the condensate drain discharges (usually outside near the outdoor unit or into a gully) and clear the outlet of leaves, mud, insect nests or garden growth. Check the ceiling space for pooled water and turn the system off if you find any. Do not pour chemicals or drain cleaner into the line. If the outlet is clear and 08 stays, the pump or float switch has failed — book a technician promptly, as this code is protecting your ceiling.

09 Indoor address repeated — two or more indoor units on the same system have been given the same address. Indoor PCB LED 9 flashes; panel display E09. Duplicate address DIP switch or controller address setting after installation or a board replacement. Book a service
10 Indoor unit ice (anti-frost) protection — the indoor coil temperature has fallen too low and the unit has shut down to stop the coil freezing. This is the wired-controller equivalent of E5 on a wall-mounted unit (outdoor LED flash count 22, indoor PCB flash 16). Dirty or clogged return-air filter; blocked return-air grille; too many zones closed on a ducted system so airflow is too low; crushed or disconnected flex duct; indoor fan running slow; low refrigerant charge; faulty indoor coil sensor. Try this first
11 DC voltage supplied to the indoor fan motor driver is too high or too low. Indoor PCB LED 17 flashes. Fan motor driver power supply fault, a mains supply problem to the indoor unit, or a failing indoor power board. Switch off & call
12 Series-dependent: indoor fan motor driver over-temperature — driver exceeded 95°C (high static ducted, indoor PCB LED 18 flashes); on the MRV-S slim duct/cassette platform code 12 instead means the 4-way valve of the 3-pipe valve box failed to reverse. Fan motor driver running hot from an overloaded or obstructed fan, poor cooling of the electrical box, or (on the other platform) a stuck valve box reversing valve. Book a service
13 Indoor fan motor out of step — the drive lost control of the motor rotor position. Indoor PCB LED 19 flashes. Wrong rotor location detected: obstructed or dragging blower wheel, failing fan motor, or a fan driver fault. Book a service
14 An outdoor unit fault is present — the indoor unit is only signalling that the fault lies outdoors. Panel display E20. The actual outdoor number must be decoded (see series notes: hexadecimal conversion on AD100–AD160, or (M×10+N)−20 from indoor LED4/LED3 on AD180/ADH200). Any of the outdoor unit error codes listed in the outdoor group below. Book a service

Ducted and light-residential outdoor unit faults — numeric codes (outdoor board LED3 flash count)

1 Outdoor main board memory (EEPROM) malfunction. Haier classes this as non-resumable — it will not clear by itself. EEPROM chip damaged, data corrupted, or the related circuit on the outdoor board has failed. Try this first

Switch the system off at the circuit breaker and outdoor isolator for a full 2 minutes, then restore power. Non-resumable codes only clear once power has been removed and the fault fixed — if it returns, the outdoor board needs replacing.

2 PIM/IPM power intelligent module hardware overcurrent — the module hardware detected excessive input current and shut down. Non-resumable. Refrigerant overcharge, blocked condenser, extreme load, refrigerant circuit restriction, seized compressor, or a failed module. Switch off & call
3 Compressor overcurrent during deceleration. Non-resumable. Compressor drawing excessive current as the inverter ramps it down — commonly overcharge, high head pressure or a failing compressor. Switch off & call
4 Communication failure between the outdoor control board and the compressor driver module (no data for over 4 minutes). Loose or damaged inter-board harness between the control board and driver module, or a failed driver module. Book a service
5 Compressor overcurrent detected by the outdoor control board. Non-resumable. Compressor overloaded or failing, refrigerant overcharge, high condensing pressure, or a current-sensing fault. Switch off & call
6 DC or AC voltage too high — the driver module measured mains above roughly 265 V AC, or a DC bus above about 390 V DC. Mains supply voltage too high, or a fault in the outdoor power/PFC circuit. Switch off & call
7 Compressor current sampling circuit fault — the driver module can no longer measure compressor current. Non-resumable. Damaged current-sampling circuitry on the compressor driver module. Switch off & call
8 Compressor discharge temperature too high — over 115°C. Clears if the temperature falls back below the reset point within 3 minutes, but locks out if it occurs 3 times in an hour. Non-resumable once locked. Low refrigerant charge or leak, blocked or dirty condenser, restricted airflow around the outdoor unit, or a refrigerant circuit restriction. Switch off & call

10 Outdoor defrost coil temperature sensor (Te) abnormal — reading below −40°C or above 90°C, or detected as open/short circuit. Defrost thermistor open or short circuit, dislodged from the coil, or a loose plug. Book a service

Clean the indoor/return-air filters and make sure supply and return grilles are open — on ducted, open at least the minimum number of zones your system requires. Restart and watch. If it trips again, book a technician.

21 Indoor pipe temperature too low protection — the outdoor unit stopped to prevent the indoor coil icing up and to stop very cold air being delivered. Restricted indoor airflow from clogged filters, a dirty coil, closed zones, or a low refrigerant charge. Try this first

Turn the system off, wash the indoor filters, let any ice on the indoor coil melt fully, open up the grilles/zones, then restart. If it recurs, it is very likely low on refrigerant — book a service.

22 PFC circuit loop overcurrent — excessive current detected in the power factor correction circuit. Non-resumable. Fault in the outdoor PFC/power circuitry, or a supply abnormality. Switch off & call

Repair or replace your Haier?

A fault code tells you something's wrong — it doesn't tell you whether the unit is worth fixing. The age of the system is the honest starting point:

Repair usually wins

Most fault codes on a young unit trace to something sensible — a sensor, a board, a blocked drain — and a proper diagnosis first means you pay for the diagnosed fault, not guesswork. A Haier under eight years old is normally worth fixing.

8–15 years

Get both numbers

This is judgement-call territory. A cheap fix on a working system is still good money — but if the fault is compressor- or inverter-side, the repair can be a third of a new unit's installed price. Ask for the repair quote and the replacement quote together and decide once, with real numbers.

15+ years

Replacement is usually better money

Efficiency has moved a long way in a decade — a modern unit cools the same room for a fraction of the running cost — and parts supply for older series thins out with age. At this age, money spent on another repair is usually money towards a unit that's near the end either way.

What replacement actually costs: a like-for-like split swap in Perth typically runs $1,700–$3,800 supply and installed — about the same as a first-time install, because decommissioning the old unit (legal refrigerant reclaim, removal, disposal) offsets the saving from reusing the circuit. Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Haier's E and F codes?

E-codes are indoor-side faults — sensors, fan, drainage, communication. F-codes are outdoor-side faults (compressor, inverter, outdoor sensors) reported through the indoor unit's display. Ducted systems use their own numeric codes on the wired controller instead.

My technician quoted a code I never saw on the display — how?

Several outdoor faults (F2, F8, F14, F19 and F23) are hidden codes. They're signalled as flash counts on the outdoor board's LED1 and only reach the indoor display after a specific button sequence, so a technician reading the outdoor unit sees codes you can't.

Can I clear a Haier fault code myself?

Switch off at the breaker for two minutes and restart — one-off trips and protection codes often clear. If the code returns, it's a real fault. Repeatedly resetting a compressor or refrigerant fault is how a repair becomes a replacement.

My Haier shows a code that isn't listed — what now?

Haier's meanings shift between series and the ducted range uses a different numbering entirely. Call 0434 951 341 with the code and your model number (on the indoor unit sticker) and we'll decode it for your exact system.
